Election Commission (EC) has taken steps to make public the annual audit reports of the registered political parties.

?We?ve sent letter to all registered political parties seeking permission to make their annual audit reports public,? Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) M Shakhawat Hossain told BSS Saturday.

?Immediately after getting permission, the EC will post the audit reports of 38 registered political parties on its website,? he added.

According to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the EC cannot publish such reports unless political parties give permission, he said, adding, ?Because this is not our information, it is still their property.?

According to the Political Party Registration Rules, it is compulsory for every political party to submit their audit reports of the past calendar year to the Commission by July 31 every year.

The EC thinks that submission of audit reports by political parties will help ensure transparency in their financial transactions. ?BSS
