Sale of sacrificial animals gains pitch in city

Sales of sacrificial animals gained momentum on Saturday in most of the city?s cattle markets, two day ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.

But, prices of the cattle were found higher in the markets in the morning session compared to that of the last year.

The supply of sacrificial animals is steady and the number of cows, camels and goats in the markets is much higher than that of last year, trader Kamal Hossain at Gabtali market told BSS.

?We are expecting a boost in sales today and tomorrow (Sunday),? he said.

The traders told this correspondent that around thousand of trucks carrying cattle were on the way to the capital from different districts.

A buyer Rafikul Islam, however, alleged that traders charge high price of the cattle despite huge supply of sacrificial animals in the markets.

Sources said Dhaka City Corporation has allowed 13 makeshift cattle markets in the capital this year. Besides, the district administration has also given permission to seven markets.

The markets are at Taltala (Khilgaon) Bus Stand, Uttar Shahjahanpur, Jhigatala-Hazaribagh Ground, Dhupkhola Playground, Banarupa Housing Project at Khilkhet, Banani-Kakoli Level Crossing, Agargaon (adjacent to LGED Bhaban), Rahmatganj Playground, Azampur (Uttara) Government Primary School

Playground, Purbachal, Meradia Bazar Playground, Armanitola (adjacent to Chitra Cinema Hall) and Balurmath (adjacent to Brothers? Union Sporting Club in Kamalapur).

On the other hand, many traders have set up cattle market on the street in city?s different areas.

Another trader Kabir Ahmed said most of his animals remained unsold. ?There might be an aggressive sale from today,? he hoped.

Visiting the makeshift markets in different areas, it was found that buyers are gathering at the markets from morning to buy the sacrificial animals. Ahmed Hossain from Mirpur said the traders claim huge price for middle size cows this year compared to the previous year.

?The higher price of animal hit hard the middle-income people like me to manage the extra cost for the animal to sacrifice,? he added.

Apart from cows, the prices of goats at the cattle markets are much higher in comparison with the last year.

Aminul Islam, a businessman, said the price of goat has doubled this year. ?I had bought two goats at Taka 11,500 during the last Eid- ul-Azha. But this time the traders are asking for Taka 25,000.? ?BSS
