Kelly calls for the inclusion of the army in the RPO

Aruna (citizens for good governance) organized a press conference at the National Press Club to place a nine-point proposal on strengthening the Election Commission (EC) and the possible change in the RPO.

Addressing the meeting said Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, the armed forces in the definition of the law, the enforcement agencies RPO should be included in the mark.

Kelly suggested the restoration of the 'no'-determination in the RPO, the first was scrapped in 2008 and 2009.

Kelly said the Commission should have the absolute power to postpone or cancel election in an investigation in the case of a serious violation of laws and rules of conduct.

The five other proposals include, with photographs of candidates in addition to election symbols in the ballots, introduction of electronic filing system for the nomination and make prepared in each electoral district on the basis of the opinions it activists and politicians for the party to select its candidates by a three-member Panel of the grassroots.

Kelly President M Hafizuddin Khan and his executives justice Kazi Ebaidul Haque, ASM Shahjahan and Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the press conference.

On September 16, the Cabinet approved the draft amendments to the representation of the people's order 1972.

Earlier, the EC sent a series of proposals for the collection of change in 28 clauses of the RPO of which most supplement got the Cabinet.

The approved proposals include raising the ceiling of election expenses for candidates from TK 1.5 million to 2.5 million and their security deposits of TK 10,000 to 20,000 TK and individual donations to political parties by TK 0.5 million to 1 million and organizational donations by TK 2.5 million to 5 million.

Dr Badiul Alam said that the possible change of the RPO further enhances not the constitutional body of EC.

Kazi Ebaidul Haque stressed the need for a strengthening of the constitutional body EC with regard to the elections fair and neutral.

"There is to be nothing for the Commissioners concerned, because they are constitutional obligations discharged. Should they keep a stance with their spines straight, otherwise the nation they will forgive not take, '' he said.
